Bergen Food-festival September 10. – 12. 2010
Bønder i Byd’n is the official title of the Food-festival,
and means Farmers in Town
The title reflects the old tradition of farmers from the rural
districts coming to Bergen to sell their produce. (It’s also
used as a negative remark among urban citizens about visitors from
rural districts. We use self-irony and turn it around to something
positive).
History
Bønder i Byd’n was held for the first time in 1989 as a one
day event. The festival expanded in 2002 to three days, and it
was a tremendous success. We have now run the festival for seven
years in it’s present form, and we will continue this line
in 2009.
Location
The festival is held at Bryggen, the Hanseatic wharf. The World
Heritage Site of Bryggen is all that remains of an ancient wharf
on the east side of Bergen’s central harbour – Vaagen.
We use both the area in front of the houses and along the narrow
passages between the houses. You will find lot of interesting

Aim
The purpose of the festival is to promote small-scale food production
to the urban market. In recent years quite a few farmers on the
west coast have developed a variety of products, many of them
based on traditional local recipes.
Participants
Farm-based food businesses from the counties of Hordaland and Sogn&Fjordane
are invited to sell their products. We also invite various tourist
businesses wich promote local food as a part of their products,
and other local small businesses in connection with small-scale
food production.
Activities for children
There will be activities for the kids including workshop in woodcrafts
with skilled craftsmen, and of course barbecuing hotdogs on the
bonfire.
Restaurants
2 or 3 restaurants will be established within the festival-area,
where visitors can enjoy local food accompanied by local cider
and beer.
Entertainment and activities
On the festival stage local musicians and other artist will entertain
the public throughout the festival.

Sales: Friday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Sunday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Organisation
The festival-organisation is a cooperation of farmer-organisations,
the County Governor of Hordaland, City of Bergen and representatives
for local small-scale food businesses. The Agriculture department
at the County Governor of Hordaland serves the technical administration
and project management.
